5 Reasons Why We Should Use Linux

Linux is an alternative operating system that can be used in addition to Windows and Mac OS. In this article, the author wants to share about the Linux operating system, and explain the reasons why we should use Linux.

1. Price

Linux operating system is always available for free, there are various types of Linux that we can download and use for free. With only Internet access, most Linux operating systems can be downloaded for free. Even Ubuntu Linux provides a free CD that can be sent to us for free.

Additionally, in a Linux distro, we have provided various other applications in full, such as applications for Office, for drawing and for the need to access the internet, if you choose a particular distro, there are even other free software that is tailored to the needs of the user.

Why can this happen?, because every Linux distribution is software that is provided open source, the point is that these systems and applications can be modified and redistributed by us without incurring a license fee.

2. More resistant to viruses

The reason for using linux is because of this. The Linux operating system is an operating system that is practically free of viruses. Different from popular operating systems which are more exposed to viruses.

If I may say, in this world there are actually no computer viruses, there is a Windows virus because most viruses are intended for the Windows operating system.

Currently, Linux is not a popular operating system, Linux is the third most popular operating system in the world, after Mac OS X and Windows, so virus makers tend not to be interested in creating viruses for Linux that are not widely used by users.

Especially if we share a mailing list or forum that discusses the Linux we use, there will be many people who want to help us when we experience difficulties or problems in using the Linux that we use.

3. Ease of getting Software

If you still think that Linux is a difficult application to use, then it will change when you start using Linux today, in most Linux distros, Software Center has been provided where users can download all the applications they need, from productivity applications, entertainment, games and other utility applications that may be needed.

Although most apps are available for free, that doesn't mean they're “cheap quality”, most applications are actually very good and even much better than the paid applications on other operating systems, but on Linux there are also some paid applications, but the number is much less than the free applications.

4. Compatibility

If you think that Linux has a system that is not compatible with Linux, go ahead, but from the author's experience, common application files owned by Windows can be run and opened properly by applications on Linux.

Such as .DOCX, .XLSX and .PPTX files can be opened and run properly by the LibreOffice application package. Or .PDF, and .PSD applications can also be opened properly by a PDF reader application on Linux called DocumentViewer and Photoshop files ending in .PSD can be opened and run properly with a photo editor application on Linux called Gimp.

Interestingly, all the applications that are on Linux earlier are available for free once we install Linux on the PC, so these applications do not have to be installed separately, but are already in the Linux package in general.

From the name we can guess that User Community Support is support from users or users who have more expertise who can write code on Linux to provide assistance to other Linux users, these types of users can be found on mailing lists, forums or through chat services both on YM and on mIRC.

5. Community Support

There are two types of community support in Linux, which is divided into User Community Support and Professional Support. This is the reason for using Linux.

(If you think mIRC is an old-fashioned chat service, but this service is still used today and is still a popular chat service on the Internet, including among Linux users).

While Professional Support is support provided directly by the Linux distribution maker itself, e.g. Ubuntu Linux developed by Canonical Ltd company, led by Mark Shuttleworth where they will provide full support for Linux Ubuntu users up to the professional level.

Another thing that the author finds interesting from the reason for using Linux is, availability of Live 9 version or better known as Live CD and Live USB), where we can try one of the existing Linux distributions and run it from a CD or USB Flashdisk without installing it to the hard drive.

If indeed we really like the performance and appearance of the Linux distro, then we install it into the hard drive. Interestingly, we can also install Linux alongside other operating systems without deleting the existing operating system on our computers. So we can switch to using the Windows or Linux operating system at any time.
